SUMMARY:Festival of Lessons & Carols
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the traditional Festival of Nine lessons and Carols with the choir and congregation of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church\, East Haddam\, Sunday\, December 17 at 10 am. The church will be beautifully decorated for Christmas\, and there will be many opportunities to join in the singing of Christmas carols.\n\nFirst introduced to Kings College\, Cambridge in 1918. Lessons & Carols service was designed to offer solace to people who were distressed\, and in many cases\, bereaved\, at the end of World War I. It has endured and remains as a time to step back from the hustle & bustle of the holidays and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas.\n\nSt. Stephen’s building is modeled after the stone churches found through England\, Ireland\, and Scotland. Legend has it that it’s bell is the oldest in the western hemisphere\, cast in Spain in 815 for a Spanish monastery. It is still rung by hand prior to every service.\n\n\n~~~ \nWhoever you are\, wherever you find yourself on life’s journey\, and whatever questions dwell in your heart\, you are welcome here. Whatever your race\, class\, sexuality\, beliefs\, or talents\, we hope that you join us in the radical hospitality of God’s table.  \n.

DESCRIPTION:The holiday season reminds many of us what we have lost or nearly lost. The anguish of broken relationships\, the insecurity of unemployment\, the weariness of ill health\, the pain of isolation\, the  loss of a close family member\, friend or family pet can contribute to a feeling of being alone\, of “feeling blue” in the midst of the society around us which seems bent on “being happy” and “celebrating.” \nA special church service\, hosted by the St. Stephen’s will be held on Sunday\, December 3 at 5:15 pm. Everyone is invited to come early to share in a community meal provided by Harvest House which starts at 4pm.  \nThe service is a time for people to acknowledge their common sadness and loss. Clergy and parishioners from St. Stephen’s will lead the service. The public is invited.
